Leeds United left side transformed with return of Junior Firpo

Leeds United will be hoping to transform their left flank with the reintroduction of Junior Firpo to the starting XI against Cardiff City.

The full-back has returned to Daniel Farke’s starting team for the first time since 7 December, when he sustained a hamstring injury from which he has only just come back with a sprinkling of action from the bench.

Firpo replaces the reliable deputy in Sam Byram as one of two changes to Farke’s line-up at Elland Road (1 February), as an in-form Cardiff side make the long trip hoping to continue climbing the table following a dreadful start to the season.

Junior Firpo back and ready for Leeds United

Firpo has endured a largely mixed reception since his arrival at Elland Road with performances – particularly during the Premier League days – sometimes found wanting.

The 28-year-old however enjoyed a positive start to this campaign, combining improved defensive work with a freedom to get forward against Championship opposition.

He looked to be thoroughly relishing each game that arrived until injury struck, during which time the experienced Byram has filled in with a professional contribution.

Firpo will now look to cement his place after a spell of almost two months that will have felt a lot longer, finally getting back out on the pitch with a cameo in the FA Cup against Harrogate Town (11 January) and then playing most of the second half in the win over Norwich City (22 January).

Many questions still surround the future of the Dominican Republic international whose contract in West Yorkshire expires in the summer, but for now, he will be putting his heart and soul in for the badge back on his chest.
