View: Hernandez may have played last game for Leeds United
Pablo Hernandez may well have played his last game for Leeds United after he failed to make the squad against Burnley on Saturday.
The Leeds hero, who was hailed as the player who pushed the club over the line in the race for promotion last season, has hardly featured in the Premier League.
He’s only made two starts and has come on for a total of just 15 minutes in the last 10 games.
There’s plenty of speculation that Hernandez could move to Castellon in the summer after Leeds turned down a bid from them in January.
Hernandez is a co-owner and has said that he wants to retire there at the end of his career.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that he thinks Hernandez will leave in the summer.
After the game against Burnley on Saturday, Marcelo Bielsa said that Hernandez had picked up another knock.
It’s the latest in a long line of injuries he’s suffered this season.
Leeds play Southampton tomorrow and then host West Brom in the final game of the season at the weekend.
If Hernandez is leaving then we would love to see him get a proper send-off from the fans on Sunday.
However, that’s going to mean Hernandez getting fit and there’s no guarantee that will happen. And Bielsa doesn’t tend to make emotional decisions – he’s extremely pragmatic when it comes to team selection.
If he does miss out and he does head home in the summer, this hasn’t been the end to his Leeds career that we envisaged.
All eyes will be on him on Sunday whether he plays or not.
A wave to the fans could indicate that we won’t get to see his silky skills on the pitch again and while progress means certain casualties are inevitable, it will still bring a tear to the eye.
