Leeds United given boost in chase for Connor Roberts after Burnley development
Leeds United have potentially had a door opened in their pursuit of Connor Roberts following Burnley’s signing of Shurandy Sambo.
The Whites’ fellow promotion rivals have added right-back Sambo to their ranks as their first acquisition of the summer.
Although not guaranteed, this could be good for the West Yorkshire outfit in their quest for a right-back this summer.
Last season, Archie Gray was deployed in that defensive zone of the field despite it not being his natural position.
And, ahead of the 2024/25 season, Gray has made it known to those at Leeds that he wishes to be used in midfield [Graeme Bailey, 20 June].
This statement in itself outlines the Whites’ need for a full-back this summer and showcases why it’s likely one of Daniel Farke’s priorities.
Gray was in stellar form last season despite being played out of position.
The 18-year-old has been linked with a plethora of clubs but it seems that his most likely destination is the Bundesliga, should a move be made [HITC, 28 June].
Why Leeds United should go in for Connor Roberts this summer
Djed Spence and Roberts were both brought in on loan deals across the campaign in order to fill the gap, but neither of these moves seemed to fully work out.
However, of the two, Roberts seemed to be the most compatible with Farke’s set-up.
After arriving in January, the Wales international was used 15 times across the season and even managed to contribute to two goals.

Although the 2023/24 season didn’t finish with the club regaining their Premier League status, Roberts’ impact was made evident when called upon.
The 28-year-old would likely be a cut-rate option for the Whites compared to someone like Trai Hume, who Farke’s men have recently been linked with [Leeds Live, 17 June].
In addition, he already knows the club and knows how they want to play football.
His integration would be seamless, and thanks the Burnley’s addition of Sambo, it’s hard to see why they’d say no to a Leeds move for the former Swansea man.
In other Leeds news, the Whites have been told how much they’d have to pay for Liam Millar this summer.
