Leeds United free agent signing on cards as ‘horrible’ news emerges from Elland Road
Leeds United now have no option but to enter the free-agent market amid injuries to Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu.
Sporting director Gretar Steinsson will likely be working in tandem with Daniel Farke to find the ideal options for the Elland Road outfit.
The Whites confirmed via their official website on 3 October that Gruev sustained an injury to his right knee and it’s a significant injury on his meniscus.
This means that he will require surgery and is set to be out for the foreseeable future.
Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev are both long-term absentees for Leeds United
Earlier this week, news even emerged of Ethan Ampadu now needing to spend months on the sidelines.
On 30 September, the BBC reported that the Wales international is not expected to be back before 2025 due to a knee injury.
Reacting to this, Athletic journalist Nancy Froston wrote: “A horrible week of injury news for Leeds United – midfielder Ilia Gruev set for months out with a knee meniscus injury. Joins Ethan Ampadu on the injury list. Gruev will have surgery on right knee in coming days.”
Gretar Steinsson is set for a busy few days to bring in the right free agent for Leeds United
Steinsson’s immediate task in the wake of Leeds’ midfield injury crisis will be to efficiently scout the free-agent market for a midfielder who can swiftly adapt to the team’s playing style.
His next steps include thoroughly getting reports, conducting fitness assessments and performance reviews to guarantee a quick integration into the squad.
Negotiations will focus on crafting attractive wage packages and contract terms, despite no transfer fee being involved, to secure the right player.
Throughout this process, it’s important to have Farke’s input in as well and the German himself has admitted that something could happen on the free agent front. [Yorkshire Evening Post]
This approach demands both speed and accuracy to bolster the squad without risking further complications from a poor choice of player.
In other Leeds United news, a Sky Sports man has issued a transfer verdict on a player the Whites want to sign “badly”.
