Leeds United edge closer to piece of Premier League history after 1-0 win v Stoke City

Leeds United got back to winning ways against Stoke City, having drawn with Huddersfield last time out.

That 1-1 stalemate on the road will have led to huge frustration from Daniel Farke, with slip-ups such as that one potentially very costly given how tight it is at the top of the Championship.

But the manager will be happy that his men returned to their victorious ways against Stoke on Tuesday (5 March), even if it was just a narrow 1-0 win at Elland Road.

Dan James was the hero, with his goal leaving the West Yorkshire club third in the table on 76 points, six ahead of Southampton in fourth.

The Saints can, however, close the gap when they host Preston North End at St Mary’s on Wednesday (6 March).

Leicester City meanwhile continue in top spot with 81 points, closely followed by Ipswich Town with 78 points, with both clubs having won on Tuesday.

The Foxes clinched a narrow 1-0 win at Sunderland, with the Tractor Boys edging out Bristol City 3-2 at Portman Road.

Leeds United could help create Premier League history

The situation in the Championship could help produce Premier League history, with BBC Sport reporting on Wednesday (6 March) that never before have all three clubs relegated from the Premier League earned instant promotion back there the following season.

Therefore, if the Foxes, Whites and the Saints return this time around, it will be the first time in Premier League history such a situation has occurred.

Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich are currently preventing that scenario from taking place, but there is still a lot of football to be played, with many twists and turns expected in the coming months.
