Leeds United could have Illan Meslier issue as Manchester United transfer story emerges on Saturday

Leeds United will need to be on red alert over developments at Manchester United as it could impact Illan Meslier’s future at Elland Road.

Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath reported on Saturday morning (24 September) that while Man United have an option to extend De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford, they’re in two minds about whether to do it with the 31-year-old’s agreement currently set to expire next year.

It is understood that Manchester United are “currently assessing their long-term plan” and that could lead to a change of number one, with Everton’s Jordan Pickford an option.

While McGrath doesn’t mention Leeds goalkeeper Meslier, 22, in this update on De Gea, the Frenchman has been linked with a move to Man United very recently.

The Athletic reported on 12 August that Meslier is viewed as a possible long-term replacement for De Gea.

Fabrizio Romano added on 17 August that Man United were working on signing a new goalkeeper and that Leeds viewed Meslier as “untouchable”.

And while Leeds’ stance on Meslier might not have changed in the last month, there’s no doubt that “untouchable” tag was placed on the goalkeeper due to the late stage of the summer transfer window where his name was linked with Man United.

If the Old Trafford club makes a bid for Meslier at the start of next summer, we might have a problem.

Meslier has developed brilliantly at Leeds.

Not many clubs in the world can boast having a starting goalkeeper as young as the former Lorient man, who’s already played 79 times in the Premier League and kept 17 assists.

Sure, he’s not perfect. But he’s already showing more quality than goalkeepers 10 years his senior in the top tiers of English football so it’s no surprise to see clubs like Man United lurking.

Meslier is a future France number one and is probably someone who’ll want to play regularly in European football.

He could do that at Old Trafford and he’s unlikely to get that at Elland Road.

If Man United take the decision to offload De Gea, Leeds will no doubt have a problem with Meslier.

Let’s just hope the Red Devils keep the Spaniard.
