Leeds United fans have been crying out for help at left-back and the stars look to be aligning for them to finally get their wish in January.
The board neglected to add another option at the position in the summer despite Junior Firpo’s struggles since he arrived from Barcelona, which has left centre-back Pascal Struijk holding down the position throughout the season so far.
On The Phil Hay Show on Monday (7 November, 19min 30sec) The Athletic journalist claimed that he was getting a “strong sense” that the club will finally look to rectify that situation in the winter window, and now one of their previous targets should be available at just the right time.
Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg reported on Twitter Monday evening: “Excl. News Borna Sosa: The 24 y/o left back is set to leave Stuttgart in winter. VfB HAS TO sell him due to the financial situation! The club is expecting €15-25m, depending on his performances at the WC!”
CBS’ Ben Jacobs had previously reported in the summer that Sosa, 24, was a player that the Whites were looking at, posting on his own Twitter account on 18 July that they had “scoured him historically but chose not to make a move”.
Choosing not to make a move at a problem position has proven to be a mistake, and the defence is currently a clear weakness in Jesse Marsch’s team.
It is all the more important to address the issue as the rest of the back line can’t carry a makeshift full-back, and Struijk looks like he is probably needed in the centre, given Diego Llorente and Robin Koch’s struggles.
Sosa isn’t cheap but Leeds United got through the entire summer window, bringing in a decent haul of players, for a minimal net spend after selling Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips.
It isn’t too extreme to say that without strengthening at the back in the winter it leaves the door open to another relegation battle, even in light of the two dramatic wins in the last fortnight.
If Victor Orta is ready to finally go out and address the left-back issue, Sosa is there for the taking, and while there is sure to be competition there appears to have never been a better time to land the Croatia international.
In other Leeds United news, new contract talks are now on the cards for a youngster who is impressing and drawing interest from multiple clubs.
