Leeds outcast Joe Gelhardt can be smash hit at Hull on one condition
Joe Gelhardt looks highly likely to leave Leeds United for more playing opportunities in January, with Hull City the latest club staking their interest.
Gelhardt will be desperate to prove the point that he is an astute Championship player on his day – something many Leeds fans are aware of, but there remains simply no avenue for him to carve a way into Daniel Farke’s side.
The Whites will not sanction many departures from Elland Road from Farke’s first team squad this month, but Gelhardt looks a certainty to head for the exit with suitors lining up, and Ruben Selles potentially about to get his man [Hull Daily Mail, 7 January].
However, if the recently appointed Hull boss doesn’t deploy Gelhardt in a way that suits his game, the 22-year-old could turn out to be entirely ineffective.
Leeds United ace Joe Gelhardt excels as a second striker
Gelhardt has struggled for a sustained run of football since joining Leeds from Wigan Athletic back in 2020.
He remains a popular figure due to his personable attitude, professionalism and the moments he has given Whites fans down the years in spells, but everyone is in agreement he needs a fresh start.
The most appearances Gelhardt has made in a season throughout his career came during a half-season loan at Sunderland in 2022-23, which speaks volumes about his lack of opportunities.

At the time, he was signed to play off central striker Ross Stewart, now at Southampton, but Stewart’s season ended through injury days after Gelhardt’s arrival – meaning he had to lead the line in a role barely suited to his strengths.
The England youth international worked hard but notched just three league goals – Selles is likely to have gathered this research in preparation for capturing Gelhardt, and it will be interesting to see how a potential January exit develops and benefits his career.
