Leeds United are likely going to be a team on a mission this season after failing to gain Premier League promotion last term.

The West Yorkshire club managed to rack up a total of 90 points in 2023/24 but still failed to gain automatic promotion.

Not only does this show how competitive the second tier was last term but it also outlines why Leeds could be on a mission this campaign.

The club has already welcomed back Joe Rodon permanently, who was one of their most sought-after targets and they've even managed to add Jayden Bogle to their ranks.

And, although arrivals are all well and good, they won't mean much if too many exits occur.

Archie Gray and Glen Kamara are two big names that have exited Elland Road this summer and Illan Meslier was a player who has been consistently linked with a move away.

However, after speaking with Leeds Live on 29 July, it feels as if the keeper has confirmed where his future lies as he said the following: “It’s always been clear in my mind, I want to go back up with Leeds. There weren’t doubts, or things like this, in my mind.”

Illan Meslier staying at Leeds United is a positive thing for the club

Meslier's sale was long linked throughout the vast majority of the transfer window. Marseille were the team most rumoured to have an interest but a move never came to fruition.

Whilst the West Yorkshire outfit do have two other first-team keepers within their ranks in Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns, neither are as good as the Frenchman.

Meslier is still just 24 years old and has plenty of room to develop into an even stronger player than he already is.

Since arriving from Lorient at the start of the 2019/20 season, the keeper has played a total of 175 games and has managed to keep a total of 51 clean sheets.

His strongest season was 2023/24 as he managed to accumulate a total of 21 clean sheets across all competitions.

In addition to this, with the 24-year-old staying, it allows the Whites to focus on improving other areas of the team rather than attempting to find a Meslier replacement.
