Helder Costa Elland Road exit could free up space for Leeds to sign Cody Gakpo

Leeds United attacker Helder Costa is set to leave Elland Road this summer and that could free up space for Jesse Marsch to pursue a move for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo.

It has been revealed by the Yorkshire Evening Post on Wednesday 3 August that Saudi Arabian side AI-Ittihad are interested in signing 28-year-old Costa.

The winger has been a peripheral figure at Elland Road in recent years, having spent the 2021/22 season out on loan in LaLiga with Valencia.

Foot Mercato reported (2 August) that Leeds are still paying attention to Gakpo’s situation at PSV Eindhoven and Costa leaving Elland Road for good could well free up space for the Whites to bring Gakpo to the club.

Jesse Marsch should be looking to bring the dutch international to Elland Road, with the 23-year-old a perfect fit for his high-energy and high-pressing style of play.

Gakpo would be a marquee signing for Leeds and certainly a big coup for the Whites considering the amount of interest there currently is in the versatile attacker.

Marsch is looking for another forward to add to his ranks, with Leeds clearly happy to entrust Crysencio Summerville, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood as being key men in his plans for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign.

However, another slightly more experienced player to come in would be ideal for Marsch after a hugely busy summer at Elland Road.

It remains to be seen whether Gakpo would be happy to move to Yorkshire, but if Leeds are interested, it’s certainly worth the Whites turning their current attention into something more substantial.
