Journalist Phil Hay has shared that Leeds United have held a long-standing interest in Coventry City Gustavo Hamer, in a recent report for The Athletic, 6 July.

If Leeds can follow up on their interest in Hamer and lure him to the club it would be a fantastic coup for the Yorkshire side, with the midfielder recording double-figure goals and assists in the Championship last season as his side reached the playoff final.

Hamer has had surprisingly little transfer speculation surrounding him this summer, with the focus at Coventry City surrounding star striker Viktor Gyokeres, which could leave the door open for the White to swoop in with a deal for the Dutch international.

Hamer's stats this season are incredible, with the midfielder ranking in the 95th percentile or above for total shots, non-penalty xG, assists, expected assists, and shot-creating actions all per 90 minutes [FBref] when compared to other midfielders in the Championship.

However, Hamer's talents are not limited to attacking the opposition's box, as he also ranks in the 86th percentile for tackles, completing an average of 2.8 per 90 in the league.

Leeds are currently desperately in need of midfield options, with Tyler Adams heavily linked to a move away amid interest from West Ham and Aston Villa, while Marc Roca looks set for a move to La Liga side Real Betis, and Brenden Aaronson looks like he's heading to Union Berlin.

These transfer deals would leave Leeds with Jamie Shackleton [Transfermarkt], who spent last season on loan with Millwall, as their only option in the middle of the park. Signing Hamer would be a huge first step in securing a strong midfield for their promotion bid in the coming season.

At only 26 years old, the Dutchman has plenty of years left at the top of his game and could be a mainstay in the Leeds midfield for at least five years.

His effectiveness and productivity in front of goal would make him a star player and an invaluable asset wherever he may end up, and should that be Leeds United, they will have pulled off a brilliant signing.
