Graeme Souness in dreamland after what he said about Leeds United and 49ers takeover

Leeds United have their eyes set on promotion to the Premier League this season.

After missing out on a return to the top flight through the play-offs last season, losing against Southampton at Wembley, the Whites are desperate for automatic promotion.

However, Leeds have found themselves sitting second in the table ahead of their Championship clash against Millwall on Wednesday (16 March) and need a minimum of a point to return to the top spot.

Graeme Souness makes 49ers prediction

If Leeds do return to the Premier League this term, Farke’s mind will immediately focus on how his side retain their spot in the top flight with that being the long-term goal.

Last time out in the Premier League, the Whites spent three seasons competing before returning to the second tier and they are not eager to experience the same again.

After gradually upping their shares in the club, the 49ers took 100 per cent control of Leeds back in the summer of 2023, just after relegation back to the Championship.

If promotion is achieved, the 49ers are expected to provide Farke with some strong financial backing to establish themselves as a Premier League outfit.

However, with the 49ers also looking to complete a takeover deal to part-own Scottish giants Rangers, there are some questions over how this would work.

There have been suggestions that Rangers could be a feeder club for the Whites but Graeme Souness has suggested it could be the other way round.

Writing in the print edition of Scottish Daily Mail (12 March, pg 65), Ian Herbert shared what Souness said: “If it were to be 49ers, there’s early talk that Rangers could become a feeder club for Leeds.

“But if they were to take Rangers up a few more rungs, I believe it could be the other way around.

“There’s such huge potential to take this club to another level.”

Farke and Leeds to silence Souness in the Premier League

Rangers have not won the Scottish Premiership since the 2020-21 season and given how poorly they are doing domestically this term, even with investment there is no guarantee a trophy would come quickly.

On the other hand, Leeds are a team that are firmly on the up and if they can confirm their promotion to the top flight, they will be well on their way to continuing to push this even further.

Once they get there, Farke should receive the backing to give him the best opportunity to stay in the top flight, despite concerns about other promoted Championship sides floating around.

Leeds have shown their ability to do so before and the boss has top-flight experience too.

However, given the size of Leeds as a club and the history at Elland Road, if the Whites achieve their aims in the Premier League, there can be no way that they are the ones who become a feeder club for Rangers.

The Scottish Premiership side may well have high hopes under new ownership, but Premier League revenue alone shatters anything that Rangers can produce.

There can be no entertainment of being a feeder club in West Yorkshire, and given this is a business all about money, Leeds will surely stay on top.
