Don Goodman leaves Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips out of team of the season
Don Goodman has been thrilled by three Leeds United players but has left them out of his Premier League team of the season.
Leeds secured a ninth-placed finish in their first year back in the Premier League by beating West Brom on Sunday with a number of players proving crucial to Marcelo Bielsa.
However, none of them made Goodman’s team of the season with the Sky Sports pundit only managing to give honourable mentions to Kalvin Phillips, Raphinha and Patrick Bamford.
“In midfield, Declan Rice just gets in ahead of N’Golo Kante and Kalvin Phillips. He will be a key player for England for years to come. I had to go 4-1-4-1 to fit everyone in, such as Mason Mount – who is 8/10 or 9/10 every week – and the hugely influential Fernandes,” said Goodman, as quoted on the Sky Sports website.
“I have to give out some honourable mentions too. Kante at Chelsea – who just missed out by a whisker – and the Leeds trio of Raphinha, Phillips, and Patrick Bamford who have all been really good.”
West Ham have done well this season to qualify for Europe but Rice, really?
He’s hardly their best player with Tomas Soucek easily outperforming the England international at the London Stadium.
And let’s just compare Rice and Phillips’ stats this season in the Premier League.
According to stats by WhoScored, Phillips has averaged more tackles, clearances, blocks, passes, key passes, long balls and through ball this season in the Premier League than Rice.
Yes, Rice has averaged more interceptions and conceded fewer fouls but the West Ham man simply hasn’t stood out in as many categories as Phillips has.
Leeds fans have forever been arguing with West Ham fans about who Gareth Southgate’s best holding midfielder is.
It’s easily Phillips, the stats show it. But Goodman’s decision to choose him in his team of the season provides further ammunition for West Ham fans to argue about something that simply isn’t true.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are in talks to sign this exciting attacker with Bielsa readying a triple swoop.
