David de Gea comments on Manchester United future ease Leeds United Illan Meslier fears

Illan Meslier is less likely to exit Leeds United for Old Tafford based on David de Gea’s comments that he wants to stay at Manchester United for “more years”.

The 31-year-old is inside the final year of his deal with the Red Devils, and the Telegraph reported on 24 September that while the club have the option to extend it by a year they are in two minds over wage demands.

The Athletic reported on 12 August that the Whites’ young Frenchman was viewed as a long-term replacement although there is no appetite to sell at Elland Road, but speaking after his side’s 2-1 win at Everton on Sunday night (9 October) de Gea made plain that he wants to be the man in goal there still.

The Spanish international told BT Sport after the game, via talkSPORT: “I’m just very focused on the games helping the team as much as I can.

“Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let’s see what happens in the future. I’m really, really happy here.”

That should at the very least increase the chances that an agreement is struck between Leeds’ rivals and the man who has been their number one since 2011.

He’s played nearly 500 times for the Manchester side but at his age he should still have a number of years left as a top level keeper.

Having seen the two biggest stars leave Elland Road in the summer, with Manchester City signing Kalvin Phillips and Barcelona eventually getting their way to land Raphinha, fans won’t want the next most valuable asset leave so soon after.

The France under-21 international will no doubt generate further interest over the coming seasons but if one of the primary mooted destinations solve their need in house it will relieve Andrea Radrizzani and Jesse Marsch greatly.

They will want the reliable 22-year-old to be between the posts for the Whites for as long as possible, while fans would be particularly unhappy if a move to Old Trafford became a bigger threat.

The latest comments are positive in that respect, and if de Gea gets what he wants then in many ways so will a lot of people in West Yorkshire.

In other Leeds United news, the club are still well in the thick of the race for Cody Gakpo according to an update from Sky Sports in Europe.
