Leeds United are bound to regret not pushing harder to sign Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer following the transfer saga this summer.

The Whites were only willing to offer £13million for the 27-year-old midfielder, as per Alan Nixon, an offer that was seen as derisory and was immediately rejected by the Blades [The Star].

It was understood that Leeds were preparing to make a second bid for Hamer, with Sheffield United "rattled" [GiveMeSport], but an offer never came to fruition before the transfer window slammed shut.

Daniel Farke has now been left with Brenden Aaronson and Joel Piroe to fill the attacking midfield spot following Georginio Rutter's £40million move to Brighton [BBC Sport].

Given that Hamer won the Blades' Player of the Year award, notching six goals and nine assists despite being relegated from the Premier League last season, it is no surprise to see him still in the spotlight.

Leeds United target Gus Hamer shines in Sheffield United v Hull City

Hamer has not taken his foot off the gas this season, either, now boasting three goals and an assist in his opening five Championship appearances.

His talent and skill were on show for all to see as the Blades beat Hull City 2-0 on Friday 13 September, with the Netherlands age-grade international opening the scoring after a flying run down the right flank, finishing off a clinical counter-attack.

Considering the sales of Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray, fans have been left confused by the club's lack of urgency to sign Hamer this summer.

While Piroe and Aaronson are decent players in the position, there is no doubt that the Sheffield United man would have provided an instant upgrade in the attacking midfield department.

Leeds' offer of £13million was, of course, far too low to make their Championship rivals even think about letting one of their biggest stars go, but a bigger fee could have persuaded them.

Not only would it have strengthened Farke's squad in a much-needed way, it would have drastically weakened Chris Wilder's team, giving the Whites more of a chance of lifting the Championship title this season.
