Daniel Farke has every right to be unhappy with Crysencio Summerville after Leeds United incident

Crysencio Summerville has become revitalised under Daniel Farke at Leeds United, leading the club’s goalscoring list this season.

The 22-year-old Dutchman netted another brace against Rotherham United on Saturday 10 February, boosting his season total to 15 goals in all competitions.

Summerville swept home to double the Whites’ lead after 52 minutes, netting a through-ball from Georginio Rutter, before converting a penalty eight minutes later.

With Leeds well in control of the match, and Rotherham showing no signs of a comeback, the star winger added a little finesse to his penalty, bringing out a panenka to fool Viktor Johansson between the sticks.

Despite the goalkeeper getting nowhere near the cute chip, Daniel Farke was far from impressed with the penalty kick, admitting that he was not a “big fan” of Summerville’s choice.

Daniel Farke right to worry about Leeds United penalty

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post after the Rotherham victory on Saturday (10 February), the manager said: “In terms of penalties, I am a bit more old-fashioned, if I am honest.

“I’d rather have the ball into the corner, more or less like the last home game (with a penalty) when Joel Piroe scored a goal like this. I am not a big fan of this.”

Farke has every right to be sceptical of Summerville’s panenka penalty. The winger is currently in some of the best form of his life, recording 23 goal contributions in 30 appearances in all competitions.

However, there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. If Leeds were to be in a position of huge importance, such as 1-0 down to a promotion rival, or drawing 1-1 with seconds on the clock left, a missed panenka penalty would be reacted to very differently.

Luckily for Summerville, he managed to convert against the Millers and spared himself any blushes, but many footballers have been embarrassed by trying to execute the same technique.

With Premier League football on the line, Farke needs to eradicate any boasting before the Whites can confirm promotion from the Championship, or at least make sure his players know when to flaunt their feathers.
