Daniel Farke could finally drop Aaronson after what happened v Coventry

Daniel Farke will be frustrated with Brenden Aaronson despite the Leeds United victory at Coventry City on Wednesday night.

The American played 90 minutes for the Whites in the 2-0 win at the CBS Arena (5 February) before being replaced late on but flattered to deceive, missing two golden opportunities.

Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle netted the crucial first-half goals for Leeds against Frank Lampard’s hosts to extend their lead at the summit of the Championship.

When on song, Aaronson can be sublime and untouchable as a number 10, certainly in the Championship.

But like accusations levelled others’ way in the Leeds squad, the consistency to perform at the top of his game fluctuates too much to be a regular Premier League performer.

Aaronson has had some fantastic games this season, dictating play centrally as he became one of only a small crop returning from loans in the summer to re-establish himself in Farke’s starting side.

But he has also gone missing at times, and become a source of frustration in front of goal.

Having said that, in the Premier League, he would be able to attempt his regular effectiveness on the ball without being presented with as many chances to score.

Luckily for the 47-cap USMNT star, the players around him have shown superb finishing in recent weeks to maintain a wonderful team record of two goals per game in the Championship in 2024-25.

For Farke – whose team were linked with potentially upgrading Aaronson with Aston Villa’s Emi Buendia, who has ended up at Bayer Leverkusen – it could prove to be a reassessment of the attacking midfielder if his side completes the promotion push.

Leeds United look unstoppable

Leeds are beginning to pick up the pace in their stride now, as fully expected to be the case with the squad they boast at Championship level.

Defences regularly have nightmares against the ruthless attack they possess, and Farke will be sincerely hoping his side are not pegged back by any further major injuries.

An FA Cup fourth-round tie against familiar opposition in Millwall is next up (8 February), for which the manager may look to rotate his line-up, before a trip to Watford in the league three days later.

Then the business end of February arrives. Sunderland and Sheffield United are the following two opponents and if Farke’s men can navigate those with at least four points, promotion will be considerably closer.

Aaronson has to stand up and be counted now.
