Conor Gallagher shows he is perfect for Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa
Leeds United will go into the upcoming summer transfer window in need of strengthening their squad in several positions.
While a new left-back is bound to be the top priority if Ezgjan Alioski leaves, Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta also have to address the central midfield issue.
Leeds did superbly this season but we feel that Bielsa could have managed to get the team to finish even higher than ninth if he’d had more quality among his central midfield options.
One central midfielder on Leeds’ radar ahead of next season is Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, who’s spent the campaign on loan at West Brom.
The Sun reported earlier this month that the Yorkshire giants have been closely monitoring the 21-year-old over the course of the Premier League season.
Although West Brom were relegated, Gallagher was one of their better players as he made 30 league appearances, scored two goals and supplied two assists.
While those stats don’t exactly jump off the page, his pressing stats do.
As collated by TheOther14 Twitter account, Gallagher ranked third for pressures per 90 minutes for Premier League teams not counted as the ‘big six’.
Gallagher averaged 25.24 pressures per 90 minutes ahead of fourth-placed Kalvin Phillips [23.62] and sixth-placed Mateusz Klich [21.38].
According to stats by FBRef, Gallagher was in the top four per cent of players in Europe’s top five leagues and European competitions for pressuring the ball this season.
As all Leeds fans know, Bielsa loves to see his team applying pressure on opponents, giving them next to no chance on the ball.
We also know that Leeds boss Bielsa runs his players into the ground, making him one of the most physically demanding managers around.
But Gallagher can run all day long. He’s been West Brom’s Duracell bunny this season, wreaking havoc across the pitch whenever he’s played.
As per stats by Wyscout, the Chelsea youngster was involved in 9.62 defensive duels per 90 minutes of game-time in the Premier League, ranking him 18th in the top-flight.
Now, some fans might find this stat worrying while others may love it because only one player in the Premier League picked up more yellow cards than Gallagher this season.
It shows that he’s not afraid to get up in the face of other players, force them into mistakes and turning over possession.
Gallagher is perfect for Bielsa’s midfield conundrum ahead of the transfer window reopening and the English central midfielder could be available at a snip too.
The Express reported on their website in March that Chelsea could be willing to sell Gallagher for as cheap as £9million.
He’s a young, explosive English player who’s available for a low price and ticks a lot of boxes in terms of what Bielsa demands from a midfielder.
Would there be a more fitting signing than him this season?
In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to sign this forward who’s been compared to Roberto Firmino.
