Leeds United should pursue a January move for Caoimhín Kelleher with Liverpool likely to sanction a transfer to the Championship.

Irish outlet Extra.ie reported on 26 December that Liverpool are "more likely" to allow Kelleher to leave for a club they're not in direct competition with, amid widespread interest from Premier League sides.

As a result, the current top-flight leaders would likely rather see the Irish goalkeeper move to Elland Road than the likes of Chelsea, Leicester, Tottenham or West Ham, with a January exit looking increasingly likely.

While there's still a strong chance Kelleher stays put at Anfield beyond next month, their stance on a potential transfer is a massive boost for the Peacocks, with Illan Meslier attracting interest of his own [TEAMtalk, 27 December].

Leeds United to throw everything at Caoimhín Kelleher in January

Although Meslier has been Leeds' long-term custodian between the sticks since the back end of their last successful Championship promotion campaign in 2019/20, the time feels right for a change in LS11.

With 13 clean sheets already this season, the Frenchman remains one of the Championship's leading lights, but high-profile errors have proven costly for the Whites' hopes at times this term.

Kelleher, meanwhile, has looked well and truly at home for a team who currently sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, yet could still be allowed to leave the Reds in the January window.

With a move to Elland Road preferred by Liverpool compared to some of their top-flight rivals, this should be the green light for the Peacocks to launch an ambitious January approach for the 26-year-old.

Having already played eight Premier League games this term, Kelleher is guaranteed a winners' medal if Liverpool finish the job, and he could make it two league wins at once by heading to Leeds and being the difference in their promotion push.
