West Brom boss Carlos Corberan immediate frontrunner for Leeds United job after Jesse Marsch sacking

Carlos Corberan is the immediate frontrunner to replace Jesse Marsch as Leeds United manager after the American was sacked, 90min reports.

The Whites made the move to remove the former Red Bull Salzburg manager on Monday (6 February) after a run of zero wins in seven Premier League games, with the club 17th in the top flight.

Corberan, who was a prominent part of Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching staff during the Argentine’s reign at Elland Road, took over as West Brom boss on 25 October when the club were second from bottom in the Championship following Steve Bruce’s time in charge.

The Spaniard has brought about a transformation at the Hawthorns in the time since, with the Baggies now sixth in the second tier and firmly in contention for a play off place.

According to 90min the former coach has fans in the hierarchy still, reporting: “90min understands that Carlos Corberan is the frontrunner for the job at Elland Road, with Victor Orta being a keen admirer of the West Brom manager’s work.

“Corberan’s West Brom are currently in the play-off places in the Championship.”

Master’s apprentice

While some fans have pined for the days of Bielsa ever since he was sacked just under a year ago, the chances that the revered former boss returning to work for the regime that sacked him seem unlikely, although with El Loco nothing is ever off the table.

But the next best thing might be his former disciple, who has proven himself a very able manager in his own right since leaving Elland Road.

He took Huddersfield to the brink of promotion to the Premier League, with only an own-goal deciding the play off final last year.

And while his time in Greece with Olympiakos was a flop, he has shown his work in the Championship before was no fluke with his complete revival of West Brom, who looked headed for a certain relegation under his predecessor.

If he ends up with the Leeds United job and can do anything like the same sort of work as he has done so far in the Midlands then it would be a success in West Yorkshire.

Despite extensive work in the transfer market over the past two windows, Marsch was never able to get on a proper run of form and another battle against the drop is definitely now on.

Corberan has lifted one side out of that predicament already this season, and it looks like the Elland Road hierarchy would like to give him the chance to do it again.

In other Leeds United news, it is a quadruple sacking for the Whites as three senior men follow Marsch out of the club.
