Leeds United table offer to Mauricio Pochettino to be new manager at Elland Road

Leeds United have tabled an offer to Mauricio Pochettino as the board look to find a replacement for Jesse Marsch, according to La Nación journalist, Claudio Mauri.

The board have seen approaches for Carlos Corberan and Andoni Iraola knocked back in recent days and have also made a move for former River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo.

Mauri has since revealed (via Twitter, 10 February) that Pochettino has also been contacted but the former Spurs manager has also turned down Leeds’ offer.

“Leeds went in search of Gallardo but did not even reach Muñeco, whose environment let the club know that he would not lead until June. Pochettino also turned down Leeds’ offer,” he wrote.

Shame

It does feel like an unrealistic approach, but what exactly is the former Spurs boss waiting for? He’s been out of work for a while and continually seems to shy away from Premier League jobs that become available. Leeds have shown they’re an ambitious club in recent transfer windows and could well be a good project for the Argentinian.

Nonetheless, Leeds’ manager hunt appears to be stalling. The board’s preferred candidates are all settled in their current roles and it feels as if an appointment will not be made until next week at the earliest. Feyenoord boss Arne Slot has emerged as a contender, but with the Dutch side top of the Eredivisie, it’s understandable to see why he would prefer a summer move.

Gallardo and Pochettino are both out of the Marcelo Bielsa handbook and would be good fits at Elland Road, but yet again the timing doesn’t seem to be right for both.

Michael Skubala will almost certainly be in charge for the Manchester United fixture at Elland Road and that’s not a bad thing. The under-21s boss showed that he’s more than capable of putting a competitive side out at Old Trafford and should be trusted to do so again.
