Crystal Palace vs Leeds: Dermot Gallagher speaks out on ‘comical’ Gabriel Gudmundsson scenes
Dermot Gallagher could not believe Gabriel Gudmundsson's sending off in Leeds United's draw with Crystal Palace.
Referee Thomas Bramall showed the Whites star a second yellow card in the 45th minute of the Selhurst Park contest.
Daniel Farke's men did well to secure a point, given the fact that they had 10 men for the entire second half on 15 March.
Leeds star Gudmundsson will feel aggrieved about his dismissal, but the former Premier League referee thinks he can have little complaint.
What did Gallagher say about Gudmundsson incident?
The scenes were hilarious, the referee took an age to give the Leeds man his marching orders, as he seemingly forgot he had already booked Gudmundsson.
He showed him a yellow and then finally realised the error, and corrected it, meaning the Peacocks would be without the Swedish ace for the rest of the clash, which Gallagher found hilarious.
Speaking on Sky Sports on 16 March (09:23 am), Gallagher said: “I think it is quite comical, the Leeds player, number 14 [Lukas Nmecha], says to Gudmundsson, ‘go away, he might have forget’.
“He gives him a yellow card, he has already had one 20 minutes earlier, it’s a red card, between them they have got it right.”
Why Daniel Farke will be livid
Farke will be particularly annoyed with the call and Gallagher's analysis of it.
The first yellow is not up for debate, Brennan Johnson had took the ball before he was caught by the defender.
It was very harsh, the tackle that earned him a second yellow card was slightly late, there is an argument to be had to it was not a booking.
In fact, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett believes that it was not worthy of a card.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, he said: “I can’t support Thomas Bramall’s decision to give Gudmundsson a second yellow card. This is not a reckless challenge.”
Gudmundsson will now miss one game, the Elland Road clash with Brentford in the Premier League, which will be a huge blow for the Peacocks.
The LS11 side cannot appeal the suspension, as it was a second yellow offence, as opposed to a straight red card, which will be a further blow to the German manager.
Farke will have to find a way to cope without the 26-year-old for the clash with the Bees, which could prove crucial in their fight against relegation.
If he cannot do so, it could have a bad effect on their chances of surviving in the division and drag them right back into the mix when it comes to the drop.
