Darko Gyabi and Mateo Joseph available for Leeds United relegation run-in despite England Under-20 World Cup call-up

Darko Gyabi and Mateo Joseph could still be available to play for Leeds in the relegation run-in despite being called up to the England Under-20 World Cup squad.

The Whites academy duo have featured for the first-team on occasion this season under Jesse Marsch, and their performances for the Under-21 squad have seen them earn a call-up to the national team for the upcoming tournament.

But according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Donnohue (11 May), both players will be available to feature in the play-off final for the Under-21’s and Leeds can still ask the FA for an exemption for the players to join the squad later should they want them for the first-team run-in.

“Mateo Joseph and Darko Gyabi are off to Argentina this month with England for the FIFA U20 World Cup,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“Tournament begins on May 20. England face Iraq, Tunisia and Uruguay in the group stage.

“Seeking clarification whether both can play for Leeds U21s in the play-off final on Monday 15, but it’s my understanding they will be available.

“England’s first game at U20 World Cup is Monday 22. Leeds can also ask the FA for an exemption which would allow them to join the squad later.”

Good to know

Obviously the chances of Big Sam relying on youth to perform in these next three games that are absolutely must-win are slim to none.

But knowing that he has the option of calling upon them in case of an emergency or if he sees something is a positive thing, considering we’re in a situation where nothing can be overlooked.

Leeds United

Gyabi and Joseph have both had positive impacts this season when they have played despite limited activity, and they’ve shone at the lower level too.

They’ve earned their spot to go to the tournament but if they’re needed at Elland Road for whatever reason, then the fact they’re available is obviously a positive.

Big Sam has options for his squad for the coming games and the physical profile of Gyabi in midfield in particular could be of great use when trying to close out games and pick up points late on.
