Alex Mowatt reacts as Leeds United transfer confirmed

Former Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt has sent a message to Alex Cairns following his return to Elland Road.

Leeds moved quickly to announce the signing of the 31-year-old from Salford after the sale of Kristoffer Klaesson.

Mowatt has recently signed a contract extension at Championship rivals West Brom, where Leeds will travel for their first away day of next season.

“Nice Alan, hair looks class,” he wrote on Instagram.

What does Alex Cairns bring to Leeds United?

Although the addition of the Salford City goalkeeper is not one that anyone saw coming, it’s a move that makes sense.

Cairns featured in every League Two fixture for his old side last season and managed to keep eight clean sheets across the domestic campaign.

During those games he managed to concede 82 goals but, fortunately for Whites fans, he will only be their third-choice goalkeeper.

After last season’s third-choice Klaesson was sold permanently [VG, 7 July], an addition needed to be made to Daniel Farke’s ranks.

Many would’ve likely wanted to have seen a youth prospect come into the first-team fold but the fact that the 31-year-old only cost Leeds a small fee and the fact that he’s homegrown, all make a deal seem to make sense.

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see Cairns represent the White of Leeds across the term unless Karl Darlow or Illan Meslier become injured.

Or if the Frenchman leaves this summer [La Provence, 28 June], then the former Salford City man could be used as a second choice for the foreseeable future.
