The Athletic: Patrick Bamford signed secret Leeds contract extension last summer

Patrick Bamford has secretly signed a one-year extension to his Leeds United deal, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

The 27-year-old striker has been in sensational form on the Whites return to the Premier League this season, scoring 15 goals and laying on seven assists to finally prove himself in the top-tier after a number of disappointing previous spells with other clubs.

One slight worry among Leeds supporters, however, has been his unresolved contract situation, with a deal that was apparently due to run out in 2022.

However, according to The Athletic, Bamford actually signed a one-year contract extension last summer that ties him to the club until June 2023.

That’s after a “careful look” at the FA’s intermediary transactions list that was published in March, covering February 1 2020 – February 1 2021, which shows an “updated registration” for Bamford.

Added security

Surely no Whites fan was worried about losing Bamford in the near future, but it’s great to extend the safety net around him and strengthen the chances of him staying at Elland Road for years to come.

He’s come so far in his Leeds United career after being derided by some fans and pundits during our time in the Championship.

Bamford’s finishing was often questioned but he’s put fears over his goalscoring to bed with a brilliant campaign in which only five players have struck more Premier League goals, leading ex-England international Darren Bent to call him “sensational” and “phenomenal” last month on talkSPORT Drive [17:00, 02/04/21].

We’re on course for a top-10 finish this season but there’s plenty more for the club and Bamford to achieve.

European football is sure to be our next port of call as we aim to build on the strong foundations of our first season back in the big time after a 16-year absence.

Leeds might sign a new striker in the summer to complement and back up Bamford but there’s no denying he’ll still be our main man, and we’re delighted to hear talk of his future can now subside slightly with no danger of losing him on a free transfer next year.
