‘That’ll be a £200k fine’ – Many Leeds fans react to report in national newspaper

Leeds United fans are still angry about Spygate and the ensuing £200k fine that the club got – for not breaking any tangible rules.

And the wound was scratched again today after a report in the Daily Mail talked about Premier League sides snooping on rivals training to ensure they weren’t flouting the Coronavirus rules.

One Leeds fans pleaded it for it to be Chelsea, after Frank Lampard was at the centre of the Spygate storm when manager of Derby.

Other fans called for £200k fines to be handed out to anyone found guilty.

However, that looks extremely unlikely.

Mike Keegan, in the Daily Mail, might have talked about “spying” to get a headline but the actual bones of the article were less sensational.

It referred to clubs going through the social media accounts of their rivals “with a fine tooth comb” to check they weren’t breaking the rules.

Calls have been made to the Premier League asking if what their rivals are doing is okay. If they get the green light they’ve started doing it too.

But is that really so different to what Leeds did?

Back to the Spygate case and Leeds were found guilty of breaking the spirit of the game, not breaking any rules.

It could definitely be argued that this sort of behaviour goes against the spirit of the game.

And it would be a beautiful irony if Chelsea were named as one of the sides involved. However, in terms of £200k fines, these Leeds fans are set to be disappointed yet again…
