Phil Hay shares if Leeds set for “drastic” ownership change as 49ers prepare full takeover

Phil Hay has shared that Leeds United are not set for “drastic” ownership changes under the 49ers Enterprises.

It has been reported by The Athletic this week that the American consortium has a deal in place to complete a full takeover of the Whites before 2024 for just under £500million.

Hay insisted that a new ownership model is likely at Elland Road, though, with the club possibly moving away from a chairman to a syndicate of owners.

Writing for The Athletic, Hay shared what the board is expected to look like at Elland Road as these changes slowly happen.

“That does not mean the running of Leeds would change drastically overnight, though,” he said. “Marathe and his investors have been around the table for a few years and Radrizzani has been making decisions with their input.

“However, the club might find itself moving from the chairman-owner model to what is increasingly the Premier League’s new norm: an ownership syndicate.”

New model.

Paraag Marathe has been the face of the 49ers Enterprises since they first got involved with the club in recent years.

Having said that, it isn’t set in stone that he will be the main man after the full takeover is completed, with the lesser-known York family said to be at the heart of this.

Peter Lowy has also invested within the 49ers, so there will be a number of different faces in the boardroom.

As well as that, there is no confirmation that Andrea Radrizzani will pack up and leave when this happens – with a minority role for him already mooted once he hands over his majority stake.

All eyes are now waiting for the confirmation of that handover, and more importantly, we will all get a clearer picture of the next step.
