EFL discussion may lead to clubs into huge cuts, potential day of reckoning next month – report

Leeds United led the way in the Championship by capping their players’ salaries at £6,000-a-week and it seems that the rest of the EFL could follow in their footsteps.

According to the Daily Mail, Championship clubs are “pushing hard” for the introduction of a salary cap with some teams struggling financially with the coronavirus-enforced suspension of football in the UK.

The EFL have discussed the possibility of all players having their pay capped at £6,000-a-week, forcing clubs into cutting their spending while they’re not making any money through matchday income.

However it is understood that some players and owners are not keen on the idea of pay cuts and pay deferrals. But the Mail adds that “there could be a day of reckoning next month”.

This month’s wages are expected to be paid as normal by clubs who haven’t decided upon deferrals and pay cuts but May’s payroll could be harder to deal with.

While Leeds have already agreed that course of action with their playing squad, Brentford, Preston and Wigan are close to an agreement while others are “miles apart”.

Leeds acted quickly to get this sorted and it is bound to help them out in the long-term as we continue to wait for it to be safe enough for football to return.
