‘Problem’ – Exclusive: Paul Robinson delivers Leeds warning after huge EFL statement

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that with the Euro 2020 finals being postponed and the EFL confirming their intent to finish the 19/20 season, there’s a “real possibility” that Leeds’ remaining nine fixtures will get played.

However, he said the next problem would be players’ fitness, with Thorp Arch shutting down on Wednesday morning and players keeping fit from home.

The Championship was suspended last week with Leeds perched on top of the league and on the brink of a return to the top-flight for the first time since relegation from the Premier League.

There has been a huge amount of speculation but the official EFL announcement is the first step towards a clear plan going forward.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “When the Euros were cancelled it gave the leagues a real chance to finish.

“Now the problem is the players and how much they’re playing. I was watching Sky Sports today and I think it’s only Sheffield United who are training. Thorp Arch was shut down today.

“The fitness levels players are going to need to pick up and play again won’t be there.

“Having said that, the EFL isn’t going to announce that the games are going to start again at the weekend.

“They’re going to give a couple of weeks’ notice and with the Euros cancelled there’s now a real possibility that the leagues will get finished.

“Cancelling the Euros was a no-brainer but it’s given the EFL the chance to finish in June/July. Hopefully, there might not be too much upheaval.”

We’ve said many times that the health of the wider public has to come first.

However, we’re a football site and a Leeds site, and the question of what’s going to happen in the Championship is a genuine concern.

We need to talk about these things and give fans clarity when so much of their life will be in upheaval.

The EFL announcement is the first step towards that. Getting the Leeds players back into Thorp Arch will be the next step that shows the resumption of the Championship could actually happen.
