MOT View: Bielsa trump card could be key in reported Leeds hunt to sign young forward
Leeds United have one of the best youth systems in English football and it is unlikely that you’ll to find a set of supporters who are as invested in their Under-23s as those who follow the Whites.
Marcelo Bielsa has shown a great willingness to call upon Leeds’ young stars in his hour of need with Mateusz Bogusz, Leif Davis, Jordan Stevens and Jamie Shackleton being among those who have been in the first-team squad on occasions this season.
And although Leeds have a top academy of their own, it does not mean that they cannot eye talent that has been developed away from Thorp Arch.
According to the Daily Mail, West Brom teenager Rayhaan Tulloch is someone who has caught the eye of Leeds.
Tulloch, 18, is one of the more highly-rated young forwards at The Hawthorns and he has already made two senior appearances when he featured in the FA Cup last season.
The England youth international has also been on the bench on a couple of occasions as an unused substitute but it seems as though he could be getting frustrated with the competition to become a regular first-team player at West Brom.
The Mail reports that Slaven Bilic wants to sign a new forward in January and as the Baggies already have Hal Robson-Kanu, Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore, Tulloch’s job of breaking into the senior side could be made a lot harder.
If he does want to move on then Leeds must brace themselves for a battle.
It is understood that Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Southampton and Newcastle United are among Premier League clubs interested in the teenage ace – who has scored four goals in nine Premier League 2 appearances this term – while Stoke, Wigan and Sunderland are also keen.
Leeds are just one of many clubs eyeing up Tulloch but Bielsa’s consistent use of young players in his first-team squad could be key in whatever decision the West Brom forward makes.
Based on the level of interest, it could be some coup for the Whites if they manage to pull off a deal for the 18-year-old.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa has delivered an injury update on Liam Cooper ahead of the match against Hull.
