Leeds United face Isaac Schmidt conundrum as defender unhappy at what's happened
Leeds United are set to face a major transfer headache involving Isaac Schmidt.
Schmidt was sent out on loan to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga after being given limited opportunities to impress under Daniel Farke at Elland Road.
The 26-year-old full-back appears determined to secure a permanent move at the end of the season, despite only joining the Whites in August 2024 from St Gallen.
However, his hopes of an escape route out of Yorkshire look to have been derailed by his frustrating campaign in Germany, leaving him distinctly unhappy.
Isaac Schmidt now set to return to Leeds in summer
Schmidt has made 15 appearances in the Bundesliga this season, starting just five of them.
Despite his limited minutes, Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen's sporting director, has praised him for a "decent job", but even this may not be enough to convince the club to buy him.
Indeed, Fritz admitted Schmidt is "not happy" with his lack of playing time this season.
He has caught the eye with his versatility at full-back, but with Felix Agu set to return from injury and Mitchell Weiser impressing, Schmidt's prospects are not looking bright.
According to DeichStube, Werder Bremen have the option to turn his deal permanent for €3million (£2.5m), which is roughly what Leeds splashed out on him two years ago.
Schmidt is desperate for the move to happen, but his wishes look destined to fall on deaf ears. It should be stressed, though, that a final decision on his future has not yet been made.

Either way, his parent club will have to prepare for his likely return in the summer, a surprise contrast to claims that Schmidt's value would 'skyrocket' in Germany.
Does Schmidt have a future at Elland Road?
A five-cap Swiss international, Schmidt is certainly talented, but the fact that he couldn't prove it at Elland Road means he is unlikely to make his way back into Farke's plans.
He had been signed as healthy competition for Jayden Bogle, having gained a reputation for marauding performances from full-back in his homeland.
Unfortunately for him, Bogle stepped up to the plate, leaving Schmidt out in the cold. Damningly, he did not start in the Championship and played 71 minutes in the second tier.
While a staggering turnaround cannot be ruled out, the most likely scenario would see him briefly return to Yorkshire before embarking on a fresh chapter elsewhere.
