MOT View: Lengthy injury woe for Leeds U23 player could be critical as contract expires in 2020

Leeds United fans have developed a keen eye for the Under-23s in recent years.

Marcelo Bielsa has shown that he is not afraid to promoted up-and-coming youngsters from Carlos Corberan’s to his first team and that has only increased the exposure that the Under-23s are getting.

The increased viewership of the Under-23s has led to people noticing that Bobby Kamwa has barely featured for Leeds’ youth sides this season.

Kamwa, 19, was handed a professional deal by Leeds only last year but that contract expires at the end of this season and no one has seen much of the midfielder since.

So what has happened to the Cameroon-born teenager?

According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Urquhart, Kamwa has been struggling with a length injury issue.

After signing that professional deal in March 2018, the teenager was to be promoted to the Under-23s for the 2018/19 campaign.

He did feature last term, but not too often due to injury and has completely disappeared off the face of the earth this season.

It must be worrying for Kamwa.

His contract is now months away from expiring and due to injury, he has not been able to prove himself to be able to earn an extended stay at Elland Road.

Speaking last year, Academy Manager Adam Underwood revealed there are high hopes for the young midfielder.

“Bobby has made good progress during his scholarship and this has been recognised with his first professional contract.

“It represents the next step on the ladder for Bobby and everyone at Thorp Arch is really pleased for him.

“He is one of a number of local Academy players that will move from the Under-18s into the Under-23s next season, which will further strengthen our pool of talented young professionals.

Unfortunately it seems as though Kamwa is miles off from ever making a senior appearance for Leeds due to his issues with injury in the Under-23s.

If Kamwa has struggled with the step up from Under-18s to Under-23s then his contract situation does not seem great either.

Hopefully he can recover from whatever has been niggling him to make more of an impact in the second half of the season and win himself a new deal.
