'Machine, Doing bits' – These Leeds fans wowed by U23 star v Forest, could be set for senior run

Leeds United Under-23s were looking for their sixth win a row in a behind-closed-doors game against Nottingham Forest on Friday afternoon.

They didn’t make it, drawing 1-1 after Forest pulled a late goal back, but it could have been worse.

They had one man to thank for the point, after Ryan Edmondson had given them a one-goal lead at the Nigel Doughty Academy.

Pascal Struijk conceded a spot-kick in the 58th minute but Leeds have a master penalty saver playing for them.

Illan Meslier is still waiting for his senior debut but he’s playing brilliantly for the Under-23s.

Today’s save was his fourth penalty save of the season and it’s not even Christmas. He’s saved so many that some Leeds fans can’t keep up.

His third penalty save of the season was a brilliant one against Sheffield United that Leeds ended up winning 2-1 at the end of November.

This was number four and it helped secure a draw for Carlos Corberan’s side.

Meslier could well find himself called upon by Marcelo Bielsa next year.

Number one keeper Kiko Casilla is facing a potential ban if found guilty of racist abuse from the game against Charlton.

That comes with a minimum six-game ban and that would likely see Meslier promoted for a run in the senior team.

That’s a big ask for the 19-year-old but we’d be very confident if we conceded a penalty.

As one fan said, it must be intimidating stepping up to take a penalty against someone “whose arms seem to reach both posts”.

Here are the best of the reactions from the Leeds fans this afternoon.
