Leeds United fans want Gjanni Alioski to stay after shock development

This is part of a regular series from our panel of Leeds United Super Fans. Each week, Super Fans from our Leeds Insider Facebook page will deliver their verdicts on the biggest talking points and news stories around Elland Road.

Leeds United fans are urging Ezgjan Alioski to perform a U-turn and stay at Elland Road despite the club officially bidding farewell to him this week.

In a statement on the official club website, Leeds confirmed that Alioski’s four-year spell at Elland Road had come to an end with the Whites “unable to reach an agreement with his representatives and his existing contract expired last week”.

However, in a shock potential twist, Mirror journalist David Anderson has reported that the 29-year-old may remain at Elland Road for next season

Anderson is the Mirror’s go-to journalist on Leeds and most of the stories he writes cover clubs in Yorkshire and the North of England.

He will have definitely know about Leeds’ announcement on Alioski.

However, he still reported that “an offer of new terms at Leeds remains on the table” for the free agent, which suggests to us that the North Macedonia international could yet stay at Elland Road.

When we relayed Anderson’s report to our panel of Leeds Super Fans, they were really excited by the thought of Alioski possibly staying.

Here is what they had to say:

If Alioski does stay then he cannot expect to be a first-team regular next season after Junior Firpo was signed from Barcelona earlier this week.

Firpo is an out-and-out left-back who fits in well with Marcelo Bielsa’s system and at the age of 24, he’s someone with a big future ahead of him.

Leeds wouldn’t have shelled out the money they did for Firpo either if he wasn’t going to be a nailed-on starter.

Alioski would be a great back-up option though and a great squad player – but that’s only if he’s willing to do that.

If he wants to play regularly then we do not blame him at all and a move away from Leeds is best for him.

However, we would like him to stay.

Come on, Gjanni. You know you want to.
