Leeds United fans fume over treatment of Joe Gelhardt

This is part of a regular series from our panel of Leeds United Super Fans. Each week, Super Fans from our Leeds Insider Facebook page will deliver their verdicts on the biggest talking points and news stories around Elland Road

Leeds United fans are furious after Paul Robinson suggested Joe Gelhardt may not get a look in for the first team this season.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, the former Leeds goalkeeper said “Gelhardt’s opportunities will be limited” as long as Patrick Bamford and a number of other senior players stay fit for Marcelo Bielsa.

Gelhardt, 19, is one of the most exciting young talents at Thorp Arch but is yet to make a senior debut for the Whites since moving from Wigan last year.

The England Under-20 international has wowed in the Under-23s, scoring 13 goals in his 20 Premier League 2 appearances for Leeds both this season and last.

But the wait goes on for Gelhardt to get a chance in Bielsa’s senior squad and Robinson felt as though the Carabao Cup match against Crewe last month was the perfect opportunity for the teenager to earn a debut.

After sharing his views, our panel of Leeds Super Fans weren’t best pleased with Robinson’s claim about Bielsa and Gelhardt.

One even claimed that the 19-year-old “will be sold next year” with another saying “Bielsa is wasting him”.

Here is what they had to say:

Bielsa hasn’t done much to suggest that we shouldn’t trust his decisions.

In his first three full seasons at Elland Road, we’ve struggled massively in the cups and lost to lower league opposition so many times we’d rather not think about it.

Bielsa could have played a youthful team versus Crewe but in doing so, he may have also risked being knocked out of the competition.

That could have affected the confidence of young stars like Gelhardt, who will get a chance sooner or later in the first team.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has shared the anxious messages sent to Andrea Radrizzani ahead of what was tipped as a “disaster” at Elland Road.
