Rodrigo hails 'amazing' Leeds United teammate Joe Gelhardt

Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt is “amazing” and has the most important qualities to become a top player, according to his Elland Road teammate Rodrigo.

Gelhardt has made 14 Premier League appearances this season scoring two goals, including a memorable 94th-minute winner against Norwich at Elland Road.

The 20-year-old has adapted to life well since his move from Wigan Athletic in 2020 and that has drawn praise from his teammates.

The Whites’ record signing Rodrigo believes Gelhardt has the most important quality, that will allow him to become a top player.

Talking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Rodrigo said: “Joffy [Gelhardt] is an amazing player, he has a big future, a great future.

“He’s a good guy, a hard worker and that’s the most important thing.

“Sometimes you have the quality but not the mentality but he’s in the right way.”

Gelhardt excelled

It is not often that a young player makes the jump to the top-flight and makes an impact.

Even game time can be hard to come by, let alone making an impact on the outcome of the result.

Gelhardt looks like one of the few young EFL players that has managed to break into the top flight and perform there.

The 20-year-old does look like a special talent, having made his Wigan Athletic debut at the age of 17.

Gelhardt, crucially, has had an experience of men’s football at a young age and his Premier League success’ could be put down to his previous time in the Championship.

Before signing a four year deal with Leeds Gelhardt featured 18 times in the Championship for Wigan Atheltic.

Having featured for England consistently at youth level, it will be interesting to see how Gelhardt is deployed at Elland Road next season.

Will Jesse Marsch start to make the 20-year-old more central in his plans, or continue to gradually drip feed him Premier League football.

In other Leeds United news, this player could be out for six months.
