'Literally the worst thing' – These fans gutted as player linked with Leeds signs new deal

James Milner has signed a new deal at Liverpool that will see the 33-year-old midfielder stay at Anfield until 2022.

Milner had said he would consider a move abroad or a move back to Leeds – where he started his career back in 2002 – with his previous deal running out in the summer.

However, Jurgen Klopp – who signed a new deal himself today – obviously sees the player as an important member of the squad going forward.

He has made 21 appearances across all competitions this season, including 12 in the Premier League.

His career might be slowing up at Liverpool but he won’t be going anywhere in the near future now, certainly not on a free.

Leeds fans are obviously not happy.

They have dreamed about Milner coming back and ending his career at Elland Road.

When he said that he would consider a move to Leeds, the seemingly impossible was suddenly possible, even if his wages would still have been a major problem.

His deal doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll stay at Anfield until 2022 – when he’ll be 36. But he won’t be available for free and he’s guaranteed another two years of sky-high wages.

A move back to Leeds suddenly looks a long way off.

Here are the sad Leeds fans, including one who said it was “literally the worst thing that’s happened in 24 hours.” Topical.
