Exclusive: 'Seriously lacking' – Paul Robinson names Leeds star who was unexpectedly bad v Wigan

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has slammed Leeds striker Patrick Bamford and said that the performance he put in against Wigan last week “wasn’t one you’d expect”.

He said the striker “wasn’t good enough” and that he gave away too many fouls, breaking up the flow of the game.

Leeds lost 1-0 to Wigan in a game they were fully expected to win at Elland Road. Leeds started the game top with Wigan firmly in the bottom three.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Bamford wasn’t good enough, he was wasteful. Out of possession he was making too many fouls, stopping the game, making it stop-start. His performance wasn’t one you’d expect.

“You can spare strikers missing some chances but it’s getting to the point where he needs eight or 10 chances to score a goal and it’s the same thing that we’ve been talking about for the last 18 months.

“Leeds dominate games, they’ve got intricate moves, but they’re seriously lacking in the final third. There’s only really Costa who can dribble with the ball in the final third.

“Bamford just didn’t do it at the weekend.”

Bamford is getting all the stick at the moment but he wasn’t the only under-performer against Wigan.

Costa might be able to dribble but his crossing was abysmal. He put in 11 crosses in the game against Wigan and only two were accurate. Across the previous two games, he made eight crosses and only one was accurate. [WyScout]

Bamford was wasteful against Wigan but Jack Harrison missed the two biggest chances of the game.

Leeds’ attacking problems go deeper than just Bamford.
