talkSPORT get it embarrassingly wrong about Leeds United after Red Bull update

TalkSPORT’s Nick Ellerby have suggested that Red Bull owns Leeds United in an embarrassingly wrong update after Jurgen Klopp was hired as the drinks brand’s new Global Head of Soccer.

The Austrian energy drink giants revealed on 9 October that the former Liverpool manager was returning to football to oversee the network of clubs.

Speaking to Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor on talkSPORT (9 October) about this news, journalist Ellerby made an incorrect assumption about the Whites.

He said: “He has now been appointed as the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull. He’ll basically be giving advice to all of their teams on things like coaching, playing philosophy and developing young talents.

“We know these teams include RB Leipzig, Salzburg, New York, Bragantino in Brazil and also Leeds. They own Leeds now, so it could be a boon for Leeds United.”

Leeds United unlikely to be effected by Julen Klopp appointment at Red Bull

Red Bull bought a minority stake at Elland Road over the summer with the 49ers still being the majority owners after a £170m takeover deal two years ago [BBC Sport, 30 May]. As such, Leeds’ front-of-shirt sponsor is unlikely to have much if any impact on decisions made at the club.

It wouldn’t necessarily be a negative to have advice from a Premier League and Champions League winner in the background moving forward.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager certainly has plenty of experience which could prove to be useful to Daniel Farke to build from.

With that being said, the current Leeds manager may not want outside influence to impact his squad after building towards promotion for over a year.

Having a sponsor and minority shareholder looking to impact the club’s operations and on-the-pitch antics, this could take a negative toll on the club moving forward despite the financial gain.
