Junior Firpo can be the answer to Daniel Farke problem at Leeds United
Leeds United have been in desperate need of a consistent full-back this season, or at least one that is a natural in the position.
Now, after the departures of Luke Ayling to Middlesbrough on loan and Djed Spence returning to Tottenham Hotspur, Daniel Farke is even more in need of at least one full-back.
Jamie Shackleton and Sam Byram have both been injured at different points this season, with 17-year-old midfielder Archie Gray deputising in their absences. Junior Firpo has also been a cause for concern.
The Spaniard’s start to the season was plagued by a knee injury, missing several matches and losing his spot in the starting XI. However, after a recent upturn in form, Firpo may relax Leeds’ search for a January transfer if he can stay fit.
In his last three Championship appearances, starting all of them, Firpo has recorded four assists and the Whites claimed nine points from a possible nine in victories over Birmingham City, Cardiff City and Preston North End.
Having gone 1-0 down after two minutes to a Will Keane goal on Sunday, Leeds hit back almost immediately as Firpo floated a cross to the back post for Dan James to poke home.
He was then subbed off after 76 minutes, with Farke opting for fresh legs in the search for a late winner. And, as Joel Piroe slotted home an injury-time penalty to win the game for Leeds, Firpo being sat on the bench did not stop Joe Rodon from charging over and celebrating with the revitalised star, spotted by Graham Smyth.

Firpo’s career at Elland Road has not worked out as many fans hoped due to injury, having made just 60 appearances since moving from Barcelona in 2021. But his leadership skills were on show as he shepherded the whole team back to their positions from the technical area as Preston readied themselves to nick an equaliser.
The 27-year-old’s recent boost in form should be a timely reminder to Farke, with so much talent and quality already in his squad. It is all down to Firpo staying fit, which could be a risk to depend on. But moving forward, he could very much be the first choice.
