YEP journalist: There’ll be lawsuits for years if this is what happens to Leeds amid pandemic

There will be lawsuits “for years” if Leeds United have to start their promotion bid from scratch amid the current coronavirus-enforced break, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Urquhart.

It was confirmed on Friday that all football in the Premier League and EFL will be suspended for the rest of March due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

While the action is currently set to resume in early April, it seems unlikely that will happen with BBC News reporting the peak of the pandemic in the UK could be three months away.

A lot of ideas have been floated about on how football should react, with some suggesting that the whole season should be null and voided.

However that would have a huge impact on Championship leaders Leeds, who, with nine games to play, are seven points clear of third and on course for promotion back to the Premier League after 16 years.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalists Graham Smyth and Urquhart have discussed the issue, with Urquhart suggesting that clubs will not go down fighting if that happened.

Smyth said on the Inside Elland Road podcast this week: “It’s going to be monumental and the issues it raises for this season are going to be huge because they could decide ‘let’s can it, let’s stop the season, it’s null and void, we’ll start again, it’s all as-you-were come August’.

“But if that were to be the announcement, can you imagine the outcry in Liverpool and Leeds if it was decided that no trophies, no promotions would be handed out.”

Urquhart responded: “There would be lawsuits for years.”

There’s simply no way that they’ll void the whole season.

Everyone is pointing at Liverpool, Leeds and West Brom being the biggest losers if that was to happen but look at teams like Sheffield United, Wolves and Leicester, who are all within a chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

There has to be a way to finish this season.
