Willy Gnonto makes ’embarrassing’ behind-the-scenes admission at Leeds United

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto made an “embarrassing” behind-the-scenes admission that he still gets lifts to Thorp Arch from his dad.

The Italian wonderkid has proven a sensational buy from the Whites ever since his surprise move to Elland Road last summer, going on to become one of the club’s most prized assets in so little time.

And in an interview for the BBC’s Football Focus which airs on Saturday [11 March], Gnonto admitted he still gets lifts from his dad to the ground and is currently in the process of learning how to drive after picking up his provisional license.

Jokingly asked if he lived opposite the stadium, he said: “No, it’s a little bit embarrassing, to be honest.

“I just received my provisional license.

“But, come on. You have to drive. If I study well [theory test], I could do it in two or three weeks already.”

He’s fine

The only reason many would consider Gnonto not being able to drive at 19 years old has got to be because of the money he’s earning as a footballer.

If he was a non-footballer, nobody would have any issues with not being able to drive. If he’s currently learning, then that’s good for him because, in such areas as Leeds, driving is indeed a necessity.

Nobody at the club will mind that Gnonto gets dropped by his dad. Maybe, if he was the one driving he would regularly be late.

The fleet-footed winger has arguably been the club’s best performer so far this campaign, and manager Javi Gracia won’t care how he gets to the ground, as long as he gets there safe, sound and on time.

Leeds United desperately need him in these next crucial run of games.
