Report details what will happen to Leeds-Adidas deal if season extends past summer

Leeds United are due to change kit manufacturers this summer after previously agreeing a deal for Adidas to take over from Kappa.

According to what The Athletic’s Phil Hay tweeted in February, Adidas have the deal “in the bag” but no announcement has been made, as of yet, by Leeds.

Kappa’s deal to provide Leeds’ kit was due to end in the summer but with the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the season due to go on for the foreseeable future, it leaves doubts about what will happen to that deal and the new one with Adidas.

However an update by The Athletic says that if the 2019/20 season is played to a conclusion then Leeds intend to continue using their current Kappa-branded kit as that would fulfil their agreement with the Italian sportswear company.

Where that leaves Adidas, remains to be seen but it is likely that the German company will have this kind of issue with a number of clubs they may have already agreed deals with. And with clubs that are set to ditch Adidas in favour of someone else.

This is one of many issues that is going to crop up in the coming months as the football season is likely to continue past June 30.

On that date, contracts usually expire, loan deals come to an end and other deals – such as kit manufacturing and sponsorships – can also reach their end.

Football hasn’t known anything like this in its history and a lot of new precedents are going to need to be set.
