Report details what Government insiders have said about EFL restart, Boris Johnson told of plans
Leeds United fans might have to sit through watching Premier League matches before they are able to see Marcelo Bielsa’s side back in action, according to the Scottish Sun.
The newspaper claims that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received plans for the Premier League to return in a matter of weeks with matches played behind closed doors and aired live on television for free.
It would be great to see the Premier League return to our screens but what about the EFL? What about Leeds’ bid to win promotion from the Championship?
According to the Scottish Sun, Government insiders are saying that is likely the EFL will resume at a later date due to “logistical and financial challenges”.
We assume this is because some of the clubs down towards the bottom of the Championship and in League One and League Two will find it tough to operate if they lose matchday income from games behind held in empty stadiums.
Some clubs rely on gate receipts to pay their players’ wages and stay afloat but with games to be held behind closed doors, that is going to be met with a lot of friction from certain struggling teams.
As for Leeds, they should be good to go as soon as the Government gives the EFL the go-ahead to resume.
Marcelo Bielsa’s players will need some time to get back up to speed but that should only take two or three weeks and then the Whites can finally get their promotion bid back underway.
