Reliable journalist delivers positive message for Leeds fans as official EFL response expected

Daily Mirror journalist Darren Lewis has said there is a “very strong will for integrity purposes” to play the remaining fixtures this season.

UEFA postponed the Euro 2020 finals on Tuesday, with a view to prioritising domestic leagues.

The EFL met today and an official response is expected later on Wednesday.

The Premier League is meeting on Thursday to discuss future plans.

Talking on Channel 5 News, Lewis said, “Logistically it was the right thing to do to suspend Euro 2020 so we can have a situation where all the outstanding fixtures could be resolved from the domestic leagues.

“You look at Leeds in the Championship, they look very much on course to be promoted to the Premier League. If they were to scrap the league you could imagine people would be running to the high court with bits of paper and it would all get very unedifying.

“I don’t think that will be the case and there is a very strong will for integrity purposes that we conclude this season.”

After early responses from people like Karren Brady – who said the league should be scrapped if we couldn’t play fixtures – were criticised, the majority of people connected to the game all seem committed to finishing the 19/20 season.

The EFL and the Premier League are independent entities but we’re expecting a unified response in the next 24 hours.

That’s good for Leeds.

Leeds chief Angus Kinnear said it was “vital” fixtures are finished and the word that keeps cropping up is integrity.

Clubs go into competitions with a level of expectation and spend a lot of money. Scrapping the season must – and sounds like it will – be the very last option.
