Reason behind Salzburg hardball approach towards Leeds explained – report

Leeds are potentially receiving the hardball treatment from Salzburg because there is a 20% sell-on clause in his contract at the club, according to Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Whites made a £15m bid for USA international Brenden Aaronson last week which was rejected by the Austrian side, then returned later in the week with a £20m bid.

Reports suggest that Salzburg will reject that bid [Ryan Taylor] and Leeds will have to return with a bigger bid to convince them to sell this month or wait until the summer.

But now it’s been claimed that part of the reason behind the hard-nosed approach from the Champions League side is that they owe 20% of any fee to Philadelphia Union, the club they signed Aaronson from in 2020.

That would explain why the club are so reluctant to sell the midfielder in mid-season when they know they’ll have less to spend on a replacement.

Push

Leeds are desperate to bring Aaronson into the club because of how well he suits the style and philosophy of the club and manager.

While they have a budget and won’t want to be ripped off in signing the player, this type of information is always good to know when in negotiations.

It could be a case that not a lot more cash is needed in order to be able to get a deal done this month and it’s simply about how much they need to give the MLS club.

If Leeds can find a way to satisfy Salzburg’s appetite this month, then they would be making a close to perfect signing for their squad and will see their chances of survival boosted.

It’s worth making one more big push this month to get a deal over the line and if that means entering him into the top three most expensive signings in the club’s history then so be it.
