Phil Hay issues update on Victor Orta future at Leeds amid RB Leipzig links
Phil Hay has claimed that Leeds United chief Victor Orta is keen to stay at the club next season.
The Spaniard has emerged as a candidate for the vacant technical director role at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig this summer, as per The Independent.
Orta arrived as director of football at Elland Road in 2017, and was instrumental in securing the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa.
The ex-Zenit St Petersburg man also worked closely with Leipzig in January as the Whites moved to wrap up a loan deal for French striker Jean-Kevin Augustin.
But Hay has suggested that Orta is adamant that he will not be going anywhere in the coming weeks.
Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, he said: “It could be that Leipzig are interested but Leeds and Orta insist to us that he won’t be going.
“He wants another year here and he wants a season in the Premier League.
“He was kicking every ball in the director’s box today.”
This news will come as a relief to Leeds fans everywhere.
Hay very rarely misses, and if he is reporting that Orta wants to stay, chances are that he does genuinely want to stay.
It would make sense for him to remain at Leeds next season too.
Orta has been integral to the rebuilding process that has helped Leeds reach the brink of promotion back to the Premier League.
Whether it be Bielsa’s appointment, or even his sharpness when it comes to wrapping up high quality loan deals for the likes of Ben White and Jack Harrison, it’s no coincidence that Leeds’ fortunes have been on a steadily improving trajectory ever since Orta arrived at Elland Road three years ago.
Assuming we do secure promotion this season, walking away from the club before tasting Premier League football would make no sense whatsoever.
