Phil Hay explains why crowd noise is not played continuously in matches at Elland Rd
Blackburn Rovers made the decision to use crowd noises throughout the 90 minutes in their 3-1 defeat against Leeds United on Saturday.
When the Whites have been at Elland Road, they have gradually introduced chants, with them mainly being used in celebrations after goals.
The atmosphere would have been electric in Leeds during their 3-0 win over Fulham for example, but we had to settle for the occasional chant after each goal during the broadcast.
Leeds fans questioned Phil Hay why sound isn’t being used continuously at home games, and the Whites squad have had a role to play in that.
“The EFL decided to allow clubs to do it,” he wrote in an Athletic Q&A.
“Leeds have used it when goals go in etc but I don’t think the players were massively keen on it during open play.”
Everything seems strange at this moment in time, with no one having expected this at the beginning of the season, but here we are.
Leeds have packed out three of their stands with their crowdies, but they don’t bring that famous West Yorkshire atmosphere that pushes the squad along.
At the end of the day, it’s the players who decide and if they didn’t want there to be continuous atmosphere throughout the game, that is what will happen.
Leeds have shown that they can do it either way, with convincing wins away at Blackburn and at home against Fulham.
Whichever helps the squad the most, we will be happy for it to happen and if that plays any role in helping secure promotion, we’re all behind it.
