Paul Merson slams 'weak' Diego Llorente, Leeds United man 'as soft as me'
Paul Merson has blasted Leeds United defender Diego Llorente for his role in Brighton’s opening goal at Elland Road on Sunday (15 May).
Danny Welbeck put the south coast club ahead in the 21st minute after he outmuscled 28-year-old Llorente.
Merson was less than impressed by the Spain international, while he also slammed Rodrigo for losing the ball in the attack ahead of Brighton’s goal.
“Rodrigo gets the ball, he’s only got to put Gelhardt in and he takes his time and dilly-dallies,” said Stelling on Sky Sports News on Sunday (15 May, 01:20pm).
“He gets robbed of the ball and then they break down the right-hand side.
“Welbeck makes a great run, he’s onside and makes a run with Llorente.
“Llorente’s too weak [Welbeck] pushes him out of the way, shoulders him, comes back onto his right and then just dinks it over the keeper.
“Great finish but Llorente, wow, he’s as soft as me.”
What has happened to Llorente?
He’s been an absolute joke this season.
Last term, he had his injury issues but still managed to play superbly well whenever he was on the pitch and we looked like a proper good defensive unit when he was alongside Liam Cooper.
However this season, he’s been fit and available for most of it but he’s really struggled and looks like a player who’s never played top-flight football in his career.
Llorente’s form is baffling but he’s not the only one.
It’s just that we see him as this player who’s played for Spain and Real Madrid, played in Europe and cost the club a lot of money.
He shouldn’t be this bad.
But Llorente’s been woeful and we wouldn’t mind if he was shipped back to Spain in the summer in all honesty because his defending for Brighton’s opening goal was an absolute joke.
We’re going down, aren’t we?
