‘More worthy’ – Leeds 27-year-old reacts to international chances, EUROs realistic aim
Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford has claimed there are “more worthy” strikers of being in the England squad at this moment.
The 27-year-old has been backed for international recognition after his lightning start to the season, scoring six goals in as many games.
Bamford fired in his first hat-trick for the Whites in the 3-0 win against Aston Villa on Friday – tormenting the previously unbeaten Villans.
The Whites striker claimed he is looking to be involved at the European Championships next summer, admitting he needs to continue finding the back of the net.
“That would be a dream,” he told talkSPORT.
“The important thing for me is that I’ve played six games and done quite well in those games, but it’s unfair for me to compare myself to the other England strikers who have been doing it for a long time at this level.
“They are more worthy at the minute. I think by the end of the season if I’m still doing it and I’m up there in the top scorers’ charts then we can talk about whether or not I deserve a place in the England squad.”
Definitely a chance
The more goals that Bamford scores, the stronger the calls are for him to be included in the England squad as early as November.
Why not? Looking at the scoring charts in the Premier League, the only English striker to score more is Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Delving deeper into the stats, Bamford even has a better shot conversion rate than Three Lions skipper and main-man, Harry Kane [BBC].
The 27-year-old is also averaging more goals per 90 minutes than Mohamed Salah, and this promotion to the Premier League has given Bamford a new lease of life.
Goals in the upcoming games against Leicester and Crystal Palace would give him a great chance of being called up for the November games, but he must do the business on the pitch first.
